McDonald’s will launch mobile ordering and payments in 2017, the fast-food chain’s incoming president Chris Kempczinski announced on Thursday, as it looks to become a “modern, progressive burger company.”
Mobile ordering will debut in the United States and ten major markets, helping with food accuracy and wait times.
McDonald’s food and drink competitors, including Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, Domino’s, Dunkin Donuts, Chipotle and Taco Bell, have already offered mobile ordering.
Additionally, McDonald’s has rolled out self-service kiosks and other “experience of the future” updates to 500 of the company’s more than 14,000 restaurants.
Business Insider previously reported McDonald’s plans to launch mobile ordering in Canada, France, and the UK, next year. By 2018, mobile ordering will be available at 20,000 to 25,000 restaurants worldwide, a McDonald’s spokesperson said.
